Thanks for writing this Sara, in the beginning I wanted nothing to do with pitbulls I was scared of them and the negative energy that surronds the breed. However, it was a dog breed that my husband is in love with. So I hit the internet and did some research and really educated myself on the breed and where they originated from and all of their history. Our dog tank we rescued from being homeless, unfortuneately the previous owner had taught him to chase kids on their bikes and thing of that nature. He was not outright mean but he was young, he was still a pup, so with lots of training and discipline we have fallen in love with pitbulls, he is the most loveable, protective, loyal creature I have ever met and he has saved my life more than once. Tank is so good with our son that its unbelieveable, he is even a tattle tale, if kawika is doing something wrong or getting in to something he isnt supposed to, tank is quick to let us know. I would not trade my pitbull for anything in the world! I know everyone says punish the deed not the breed but it goes so much deeper than that with my pitbull, he is intellectual, he is smart, we talk to him like he is our nine year old son, because he is. Thank you so much for writing this!! It means a lot!

Thanks so much for sharing your story and commenting! It sounds like your pit bull is amazing. Your comment, "Punish the deed not the breed" is definitely what people should heed (no rhyme intended, LOL), though I would go a step further and say punish the animal abuser instead, since that's where many violent animals come from.

We should instead focus on raising humane children who become adults who know how to care for and love animals instead of mistreat them, which it sounds like you are doing already. If only people could think of their pets as members of their family instead of objects for entertainment, like dog fighting, we wouldn't have to worry about this.

i think its crazy to take an entire breed out because what SOME pittbulls have done ...those terrible acts where not because the dogs were pittbulls but because they were mistreated, starved, or abandoned i have a blue fawn american pittbull who is a part of my family and is the best with my 2 yr old...she can take anything from that dog his toys, his food ANYTHING and he is as gentle as can be he is protective over her and its amazing because he will listen to every word she says....this breed has the most personality and loyalty of any breed and its just wong to extinct pitts because they have a bad name would it be fair to extinct the human race because of the awful thing humans have done rape, kill, steal all kinds of things but everyone has there OWN CHOICE and we are not responsible for each others actions, so why are these animals being punished for other dogs mistakes?
