Pitbulls are usually energetic, strong, intelligent dogs, who love to work. At times, this combination energy, strength and intelligence can be difficult for owners to channel. In these cases, getting the dog involved in a canine sport can help both the dog and owner reduce frustration and enjoy a good relationship. Fortunately, this breed can excel at many canine sports, and one of these sports is weight pulling.
In weight pulling, your dog will wear a special harness, which is then attached to some type of weight, such as a weighted cart or sled. The dog is then encouraged to pull the weight a specified distance.
Pulling comes naturally to many dogs, and weight pulling can give them a positive way to channel their energy.
If you are new to weight pulling, you might want to consider searching for training or events in your area. As is true of most sports, learning how to train your dog correctly will keep in safe and fun for both of you. Have your vet check your dog before starting a program. In general, you will need a good fitting pulling harness. Start with low very weights, and use lots of praise and rewards when your dog pulls. Gradually build up the weights. Remember, not only does it take time to build muscle, it takes even longer to build ligament strength. Include plenty of rest days in your program. You don’t want to risk injuring your dog; that will only set back your training.
Some canine organizations, such as the United Kennel Club (UKC), hold sanctioned weight pull competitions periodically. The dogs compete in categories by weight, so if you have a smaller pit bull, she will compete against dogs her own size. Getting involved in competitions gives you a chance to meet other owners of weight pulling pitbulls, get ideas for improving your training, and developing friendships.
